You did the work. Your answer buried it.

In the interview, you talked about what the team did and left out the decisions that were yours, so the panel never saw your judgment. Rehearse lets you practice out loud, asks the follow-up they would have asked, and shows you the moment your part of the story got lost.

You named the fix, but not why the protection failed, how you found the cause, or which decision was yours.

Your application: Senior Software Engineer

Hi there, thank you for all the time you gave us. We really enjoyed meeting you.

Unfortunately, the panel felt they needed to see a little more depth.

We'll keep your profile on file for future roles.

The Talent Team

Illustrative

The gap

You told them a bug fix. You did far more.

What you said

We had a major payments incident where retries caused duplicate charges. I worked with the team to fix the idempotency logic, and we rolled out the fix.
You, in the interview

Twenty-seven words, all true. To a panel that wasn't there, it sounds like "we fixed a bug."

What you did

Fictional example
  • The stakes

Three regions, tens of thousands of orders, customers charged twice.

  • What you uncovered

A crash between the charge and its record. Recovery retried with a new key, so one payment was charged twice.

  • What you decided

Stop blind retries, reconcile the uncertain charges, restore traffic in stages.

...the panel felt they needed to see a little more depth.

So you're told

  • "Just add more detail."

    A friend
  • "Add more detail. Use STAR."

    A career guide
  • "Be more specific next time."

    The recruiter

You try

  • STAR organizes the story. It can't tell you whether your "action" explains a decision or just names the fix.

    Same letter
  • Practicing alone builds comfort. You already know what happened, so you can't hear what's missing.

    Same letter
  • A mock interview with a friend is kind. They already believe you, so they don't ask what a panel of strangers needs to hear.

    Same letter
The antidote

Get the review before the interview, not a letter after it.

Answer out loud, the way you would in the room. Rehearse catches the moment your answer goes vague, asks the follow-up a panel would, then shows you, sentence by sentence, what came through and what didn't.

After the rehearsal

Find the sentence. Then tell the story better.

See which words carried your answer and which buried your work. Learn what a panel at your level needs to hear, then practice a coached version built from your own words.

  • Know what carried your answer

Every note points to a sentence you said. What counted is marked and numbered, so you know which words to keep and which were only context.

  • See what you left unsaid

Where an answer fell short, the review says what a fuller answer would have shown and the part you never said: the decision, the reasoning or the result.

  • Leave with a stronger answer

A coached example built on your own words. Every part is labeled: your words, rewording, details from your resume, blanks for you to fill, and anything invented.

Interviewer asked

Why could the same payment be charged twice despite idempotency protection, and how did you prove what was happening?

You answered

Each retry created a new idempotency key, so the processor saw a brand-new charge.1 I think the key was generated in the wrong place,! and the logs seemed to confirm it.

Your contributionNeeds explainingOutcome unclear

Why 2 out of 4 Example coaching

You found the real cause: a new key on every retry. But "I think" and "seemed to confirm" leave the proof unstated: which logs you compared, what they showed, and how you knew the fix worked.

Build on your answer Where every part comes from

Each retry created a new idempotency key, so the processor saw a brand-new charge. I owned that retry path on Payments Platform, so the fix was mine. The key was generated per attempt instead of once per payment; I proved it by matching [the log fields you compared] and moved key creation onto [what you tied the key to]. Duplicate charges dropped from [the daily count before] to [the count after] within [how long it took].

Included in every plan

  • A spoken interview that follows up

Questions asked aloud, and a follow-up on the part your answer left unclear. Like the one above

  • Personalized to your resume and the role

Rehearse keeps what matters from both and asks about your projects, at the level the role names.

  • Every answer marked

Which sentences counted, which worked against you, what stayed unsaid, and why the rating.

  • Coached answers, built from your own words

Reworded, drawn from your resume, or left blank for you to fill. Any invented example is labeled.

Before you begin

Your questions, answered straight.

How the practice works, what the review gives you, and what to expect from a plan.

I've done the work. Why rehearse the story?

Because the interviewer wasn't there. They hear only what you can explain in the room. Rehearse helps software engineers, from junior through staff, turn real work into a clear behavioral answer: say it aloud, face the follow-up, and see which decisions and results stayed in your head. It won't prepare you for coding or system design, and it can't promise an offer.

What happens in a rehearsal?

Bring your résumé and the job description, then choose the level you're aiming for. Rehearse asks spoken questions about your work and follows up when your answer leaves a decision, reason, or result unclear. You answer in your own words. Once you finish, the review shows what came across and what still needs explaining. No script needed.

Who decides what a good answer looks like?

The review uses a guide for the level you choose. It draws on published engineering career frameworks from GitLab, Dropbox, Monzo, Block, and CircleCI, along with research on structured interviews. It gives you a standard to practice against, not a prediction of any company's hiring decision. Those companies are not affiliated with Rehearse.

What do I actually get in the review?

A marked transcript shows what strengthened or weakened your answer. The review calls out missing detail and explains each rating. You also get a worked example drawn from your answer and résumé, with invented details labeled for you to replace with what really happened.

Can't I just practice on my own?

You can, and it helps you get comfortable. But you already know what you meant. A follow-up makes you explain what someone else can't infer: why you made a decision, what changed, and what the result was. Rehearse asks that question aloud and shows you what to work on before the real conversation.

Do you judge my voice or keep the recording?

No. The review considers your words, not your accent, pace, or pauses. Rehearse records each answer to transcribe it, then does not keep the recording. You can read the transcript behind the review. You'll need a microphone and a place where you can speak freely.

Which plan fits the way I want to practice?

Think about the interviews ahead and how often you'll want another run after a review. Both plans unlock the whole of Rehearse. Plus: €19.99 a month for 20 rehearsals. For a few interviews at a time. Rehearse each one more than once before the day. Pro: €39.99 a month for 40 rehearsals. For a full job search or a step up in level. Rehearse before every interview, with room to spare. Every review stays open for as long as you subscribe.

Can I choose a different plan later?

You can choose a different plan after your current subscription ends. Cancel your current plan in Billing & subscription to make the change.

Can I cancel or get a refund?

You can cancel in Billing & subscription. Cancelling stops the next renewal. Your plan stays active until the end of the paid period. Cancelling does not refund the current paid period. Withdrawal is a separate legal right. If it applies to you, use 'Withdraw from contract' at the bottom of any page within 14 days of subscribing. Your plan ends right away; the Refunds & withdrawal page explains any amount you may get back.

Before your next interview

Make it your last "a little more depth."

Unless something changes, the next panel hears the same answer the last one did. Bring the incident, project or decision you want them to understand, and find the sentence before they do.
